A Thriving Hub for Film and Series Production
In 2018, Netflix embarked on a journey to expand its production capabilities beyond traditional hubs like Los Angeles and New York. The decision to establish a significant presence in Albuquerque, New Mexico, marked a pivotal moment for the streaming giant. Acquiring a studio complex with a storied history encompassing iconic productions such as The Avengers and Breaking Bad, Netflix laid the groundwork for what would become a thriving West Coast production hub.
Fast forward six years, and Netflix is proud to unveil the expansion of its Albuquerque campus, solidifying its commitment to the region's burgeoning film and television industry. This newly expanded facility spans 108 acres, boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure that includes four additional soundstages, three mills, a production office, stage support buildings, and expansive backlot areas. This expansion not only enhances Netflix's creative capabilities but also reinforces its dedication to fostering a robust production ecosystem in New Mexico.
Central to Netflix's expansion strategy is a steadfast commitment to sustainability. The upgraded studio incorporates cutting-edge features such as on-site solar and battery storage systems, geothermal heating and cooling, all-electric appliances, and an extensive network of electric vehicle fast chargers. These initiatives not only reduce the studio's environmental impact but also contribute to operational efficiency and a more sustainable production process.
Since its inception in New Mexico, Netflix has leveraged the state's diverse landscapes, skilled workforce, and supportive community to produce a myriad of acclaimed series and films. From the supernatural thriller Stranger Things to the action-packed Army of the Dead and the beloved Breaking Bad universe, Netflix has utilized the rich cultural tapestry of New Mexico to bring compelling stories to global audiences. The studio's ongoing projects, including upcoming series like Ransom Canyon and Pulse, underscore its role in shaping the future of entertainment.
Beyond its creative endeavors, Netflix has made substantial economic contributions to New Mexico. Since 2019, the company has invested nearly $575 million directly into local productions, with an overall economic impact nearing $900 million when factoring in other productions that utilized Netflix Studios Albuquerque. Moreover, Netflix's operations have generated employment opportunities for over 4,000 cast and crew members from 2021 to 2023, further cementing its role as a catalyst for economic growth in the region.
In 2022, Netflix launched the "Netflix in Your Neighborhood" initiative, inviting fans to explore filming locations and cultural landmarks featured in its productions across New Mexico. This initiative not only celebrates the state's cultural heritage but also fosters community engagement and tourism, extending the impact of Netflix's content beyond the screen.
Netflix's expansion in Albuquerque would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders, including New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Senator Ben Ray Luján, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, and numerous vendor partners. Their support, alongside the dedication of 2,800 construction workers and local businesses, has been instrumental in bringing this ambitious project to fruition.
As Netflix continues to grow its footprint in New Mexico, the company remains committed to pushing the boundaries of storytelling and innovation. Through its expanded facilities at Netflix Studios Albuquerque, Netflix looks forward to creating more captivating narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide while enriching the cultural and economic fabric of New Mexico for years to come.
