Latin Americas Travel and Tourism Sector
Latin America's travel and tourism industry is poised to become a significant driver of economic growth in the region over the coming years. According to a recent report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) in collaboration with VFS Global, this sector is expected to contribute enormously to Latin America's economy, generating substantial revenue and creating millions of jobs by 2025.
The report, titled ‘Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in LATAM,’ forecasts that by 2025, the Latin American travel market could generate up to $260 billion in revenue and create approximately eight million new jobs. These projections are contingent upon the implementation of strategic policies aimed at enhancing transport infrastructure, simplifying visa processes, and bolstering tourism marketing efforts across the region.
In 2023 alone, Latin America's travel industry demonstrated its economic significance by contributing $629 billion to the regional economy, hosting 86 million travelers, and providing employment to over 24.6 million individuals—amounting to 9 percent of all jobs in the region.
Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, emphasized the transformative impact of this sector, noting, "LATAM's travel and tourism sector has witnessed an extraordinary transformation, significantly contributing to the region's economic landscape." Simpson further highlighted the sector's growth potential, asserting that with the right policy measures, Latin America could unlock an additional $260 billion in economic output over the next decade.
Despite facing challenges such as global financial crises, disease outbreaks, and political instability in recent years, Latin America's travel and tourism sector is showing resilience and signs of recovery. The industry is projected to achieve record-breaking results in 2024, with an expected GDP contribution exceeding $650 billion and the creation of one million new jobs, bringing the total employment in the sector to 25.7 million.
The journey of Latin America's travel and tourism sector has been marked by adversity, yet it continues to evolve and expand, positioning itself as a vital component of the region's economic future. As policies evolve and investments in infrastructure and marketing grow, Latin America is set to harness its tourism potential, further solidifying its status as a global destination for travelers seeking diverse cultures, natural wonders, and enriching experiences.
