The disaster unfolded on December 15, 1967, when a minor manufacturing flaw in eyebar No. 330, located on the Ohio side of the bridge, set off a catastrophic chain of events. This eyebar had accumulated residual stress during manufacturing and harbored water, promoting corrosion that eventually led to a small crack. Over the years, this crack expanded, reaching a critical length of 3 millimeters. On that fateful winter day, the frigid temperatures made the metal brittle, leading to rapid propagation of the crack, which ultimately caused the eyebar to fail.
According to the analysis by Open University, this failure led to an asymmetrical load on the pin, causing it to twist and the chain to sever completely. The neighboring tower, destabilized, began to tilt and eventually collapsed into the river, dragging the roadway and another tower along with it.
Eyewitnesses reported a sound like a gunshot at around 5 p.m., just before the bridge visibly crumbled into the Ohio River, taking 32 vehicles and 46 lives with it. Two bodies were never recovered. Charlene Wood, an eyewitness, described the scene as one where "the bridge was collapsing like dominos," a sight so surreal it was hard to comprehend in the moment.
