Family Protests Charges Against Miami Women in Fatal Shooting of Alleged Car Burglar
In Wynwood, family members and supporters gathered on Sunday to protest the charges against two Miami women, Antwoinse Lachaveia Clark, 36, and Fredericka Sherice Pickett-Wilson, 29, following their alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of a man who they caught breaking into their car in March.
According to police, Clark and Pickett-Wilson discovered the alleged burglar rummaging through their vehicle and confronted him. During the altercation, he reportedly punched Pickett-Wilson in the face before fleeing with a bag containing cash. The police say that the two women chased the burglar to recover their belongings, using pepper spray during the pursuit before Clark allegedly shot him three times.
Pickett-Wilson’s mother, Sherice Latimore, argued that her daughter acted in self-defense. "Freedom for me means letting my child go. Drop all charges. She didn’t do anything wrong; she was protecting herself," Latimore insisted.
The alleged burglar, whose name has not been disclosed, succumbed to his injuries a month after the incident, resulting in second-degree murder charges against both women. Despite these charges, Pickett-Wilson's family maintains that the actions were justified. Latimore highlighted her daughter's clean record and family-oriented nature: "My baby has never been arrested before; all she does is be with her kids. That’s all she knows."
The City of Miami Police argued that the women escalated the situation beyond self-defense. "The victims... would’ve just held him down and waited for police. We would have arrested him, and they would have been recognized as the victims. But when they pursued and shot him, that became a crime," stated Michael Vega, a City of Miami Police spokesperson.
Currently held without bond, Clark and Pickett-Wilson have drawn the support of their families, who pledge to continue protesting. They argue that the charges should be dropped due to the context of the confrontation.
Latimore emphasized that the women were only protecting themselves and are now victims of an unjust legal process. Their family hopes that continued public demonstrations will raise awareness, pressuring authorities to reassess the charges and deliver justice.
