Florida Woman Receives One-Month Jail Sentence for Selling Biden's Daughter's Diary
Aimee Harris, a mother from Florida, faced the legal aftermath of her involvement in the theft and sale of President Joe Biden's daughter's diary. On Tuesday, Manhattan federal court sentenced her to one month in prison and three months of home confinement. Judge Laura Taylor Swain presided over the case and condemned Harris's actions as "despicable."
Harris's troubles began when she pleaded guilty in August 2022 to a conspiracy charge related to the theft and sale of personal items belonging to Ashley Biden, the president's daughter. Project Veritas, a conservative group, reportedly paid $40,000 for the items, with Harris receiving $20,000.
Founded in 2010, Project Veritas identifies itself as a news organization but has faced criticism for its undercover investigations targeting news outlets, labor organizations, and Democratic politicians. The sale of Ashley Biden's diary to the organization led to legal repercussions for Harris.
During her sentencing, Harris tearfully apologized for her actions, expressing regret for her involvement in the dissemination of Ashley Biden's private writings. She explained how she came across the diary and other items while at a friend's home in Delray Beach, Florida, in 2020. Prosecutors revealed that Ashley Biden had left her belongings with the friend, believing they would be safely stored during her stay.
Despite Harris's plea for leniency, citing her responsibilities as a mother and her history of domestic abuse and trauma, Judge Swain emphasized the seriousness of her offenses. The judge highlighted Harris's attempt, along with a co-defendant, to sell Ashley Biden's belongings to then-President Donald Trump's 2020 presidential campaign before turning to Project Veritas.
While Harris's defense attorney argued against a prison sentence, emphasizing her difficult life circumstances and efforts to care for her children, the prosecution urged the court to hold her accountable for her actions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Sobelman emphasized Ashley Biden as the true victim in the case and described Harris's pattern of disrespect for the law.
The sentencing marked the conclusion of a legal saga that began with the theft of Ashley Biden's diary and other personal items in the summer of 2020. Prosecutors detailed how Harris had stolen various belongings, including a digital storage card, books, clothing, and luggage, with the intent to profit from their sale.
In addition to financial gain, prosecutors argued that Harris's actions were driven by a desire to tarnish President Biden's reputation. The sale of the diary was seen as an attempt to exploit personal information for political gain, further highlighting the seriousness of Harris's offenses.
Ultimately, Judge Swain ordered Harris to report to prison in July to begin her one-month sentence. As Harris left the courthouse, she declined to comment on the verdict or her future plans. Similarly, Ashley Biden's lawyer refrained from providing additional remarks, though a letter submitted to the judge on her behalf conveyed her perspective on the matter.
The sentencing of Aimee Harris underscored the consequences of betraying trust and exploiting personal information for personal gain. While Harris's motivations may have been driven by greed and a desire for financial gain, the impact of her actions extended far beyond her own interests, affecting the lives of those targeted by her scheme. As she begins her sentence, Harris faces the challenge of reckoning with the consequences of her choices and seeking redemption in the eyes of the law and society.
