NASCAR fines Ricky Stenhouse Jr. $75K over All-Star Race brawl
NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has been slapped with a hefty fine of $75,000 for punching fellow driver Kyle Busch during a brawl that erupted after Sunday’s All-Star Race in North Carolina. The altercation has also led to significant penalties for members of Stenhouse's team, according to NASCAR Senior Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer.
In addition to the fine, two of Stenhouse Jr.'s crew members have been suspended. Team mechanic Clint Myrick is sidelined for the next eight Cup Series races, while tuner Keith Matthews faces a suspension for the next four Cup Series events. The penalties didn't stop there; Stenhouse Jr.'s father, Richard Stenhouse, has been indefinitely suspended, all for violations of the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct.
Sawyer elaborated on the situation during an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Wednesday morning. “When you wait 198 laps and make those decisions that were made, we’re going to react to that,” Sawyer stated. He emphasized that NASCAR aims to allow drivers to express their differences but draws the line at physical altercations. “Once it escalates to a physical altercation, we’re going to react,” he added. Sawyer pointed out that despite the absence of a tunnel or crossover bridge at North Wilkesboro Speedway, better decisions could have been made during the period between the on-track incident and the post-race confrontation.
The brawl broke out at North Wilkesboro Speedway after Busch's No. 8 Chevy bumped Stenhouse’s No. 47 Chevrolet Camaro ZLI, causing Stenhouse to crash out of the race on Lap 2. With no exit tunnel available, Stenhouse had to wait for the race to conclude, stewing over the incident. After the race, Stenhouse confronted Busch in the garage area, leading to a brief heated exchange before Stenhouse threw a punch at Busch. Witnesses quickly intervened, escalating the situation into a full-blown fistfight.
NASCAR has not released an official statement regarding the penalties as of Wednesday. Representatives for both Stenhouse Jr. and Busch have not responded to requests for comment.
In a post-fight interview with Fox Sports on Sunday, Stenhouse hinted at a longstanding rivalry with Busch. “I feel like Kyle and I have always raced each other really hard. I wrecked him once at Daytona, and he’s been bad-mouthing me ever since then,” Stenhouse said. He expressed confusion over Busch’s anger, stating, “I’m not sure why he was so mad that I shoved it three wide. But he hit the fence and kind of came off the wall and ran into me. I don’t know — when I was talking to him, he kept saying that I wrecked him.”
Despite the brawl, NASCAR confirmed there were no serious injuries. Busch managed to finish 10th in the All-Star Race, while Stenhouse came in last. Joey Logano, driving his No. 22 Ford Mustang Dark Horse, won the race and took home the $1 million prize.
The incident has sparked discussions within the NASCAR community about sportsmanship and the boundaries of on-track rivalries. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how these drivers handle their next encounters on and off the track. The penalties highlight NASCAR's commitment to maintaining order and safety in the sport, emphasizing that physical altercations will not be tolerated.
The aftermath of the brawl serves as a reminder of the intense emotions and fierce competition that define NASCAR racing. It also underscores the importance of handling disputes professionally, reflecting the high standards expected from top-tier athletes in the sport.
