Starliner Launch Delayed: Technical Concerns Push Back Boeing and NASA's Collaborative Mission
Excitement was palpable at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Monday night as anticipation built for the launch of the Starliner spacecraft, slated to carry two astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) in a joint effort between Boeing and NASA. However, the eagerly awaited launch hit a snag when a delay was announced due to technical concerns.
The intended departure time of 10:34 p.m. ET came and went without the anticipated liftoff, as launch officials made the difficult decision to scrub the mission. The launch director of United Launch Alliance (ULA), responsible for the Atlas V rocket carrying the Starliner, cited concerns regarding an oxygen relief valve on the rocket's second stage as the reason for the delay.
In a statement addressing the decision, ULA emphasized the priority of safety, stating, "Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of the flight and pad crew, we scrubbed the Crew Flight Test (CFT) launch attempt today due to an observation on a liquid oxygen self-regulating solenoid relief valve on the Centaur upper stage."
The scrub occurred nearly two hours before the scheduled launch, with astronauts Sunita "Suni" Williams and Barry "Butch" Wilmore already at the launch site. Both astronauts safely exited the Starliner spacecraft and returned to crew quarters as engineers assessed the technical issue.
Tory Bruno, CEO of ULA, revealed that the valve issue was audible enough for the launch tower crew to hear from the ground. Resolving the problem would have required changing the rocket's fueled state, a violation of flight rules with crew onboard. Fortunately, after the crew disembarked and the valve was cycled, the issue ceased.
The delay provided engineering teams with the opportunity to meticulously evaluate the data and address any technical concerns before rescheduling the launch. NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test is now aiming for a launch window beginning no earlier than 6:16 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 17, pending resolution of the technical issue.
Following a thorough review, ULA has decided to replace the pressure regulation valve on the liquid oxygen tank of the Atlas V rocket's Centaur upper stage. This process will involve rolling the rocket, along with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, back to its Vertical Integration Facility at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Wednesday, May 8, to facilitate the replacement.
The mission, dubbed Boeing's Crew Flight Test (CFT), aims to demonstrate the Starliner's launch-to-landing capabilities and validate its readiness for NASA certification and long-duration missions. Astronauts Wilmore and Williams will participate in human research studies during their journey to the ISS, carrying hardware for future experiments.
Both astronauts boast impressive backgrounds, with extensive experience in space exploration and military service. Williams, a Navy test pilot and veteran of 322 days aboard the ISS, is joined by Wilmore, a former Navy officer and pilot who piloted a space shuttle mission and commanded Expedition 42 on the ISS.
As the CFT crew, Williams and Wilmore will play a pivotal role in testing the Starliner's systems and certifying the spacecraft for future astronaut missions. Their extensive experience as former Navy test pilots underscores their commitment to the mission and the honor they feel in contributing to the advancement of space exploration.
Despite the setback, anticipation remains high for the eventual launch of the Starliner spacecraft and the success of this collaborative effort between Boeing, NASA, and ULA. As preparations continue and technical challenges are addressed, the space community eagerly awaits the next chapter in humanity's journey beyond Earth's atmosphere.
