Teen died from eating a spicy chip as part of social media challenge, autopsy report concludes
Massachusetts Teen Dies After Participating in Spicy Tortilla Chip Challenge
Harris Wolobah, a 14-year-old from Worcester, Massachusetts, tragically died after participating in a viral social media challenge that involved consuming an extremely spicy tortilla chip. An autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press revealed that Wolobah’s death on September 1, 2023, was due to cardiopulmonary arrest triggered by ingesting a high concentration of chili pepper extract.
Autopsy Findings
The report, released by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, indicated that the cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest “in the setting of recent ingestion of food substance with high capsaicin concentration.” Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chili peppers responsible for their heat. The autopsy also noted that Wolobah had an enlarged heart and a congenital heart defect, which likely contributed to the fatal outcome.
Incident Overview
Harris Wolobah was found unresponsive at his home and was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His death was officially attributed to the spicy tortilla chip challenge on February 27, and the death certificate was issued on March 5.
Manufacturer’s Response
Following Wolobah’s death, Paqui, the manufacturer of the spicy chip, requested that retailers stop selling the product. The chip, which costs about $10, is sold individually in a coffin-shaped box with a warning that it is intended for adult consumption only and should be kept out of reach of children. Despite these warnings, minors have still managed to purchase the chips, leading to several reported incidents of illness.
Warnings and Health Incidents
There have been multiple reports across the country of teenagers falling ill after attempting the challenge. For example, three high school students in California were hospitalized, and paramedics were called to a Minnesota school when seven students became sick after participating in the challenge.
The "One Chip Challenge"
The "One Chip Challenge," promoted by Paqui, involves eating a single chip made with Carolina Reaper and Scorpion peppers, two of the hottest peppers globally. This challenge has gained significant popularity on social media, with participants often sharing videos of their reactions. The company's marketing emphasizes the extreme spiciness and potential for intense discomfort.
Community and Health Concerns
Wolobah’s death has heightened concerns regarding the safety and accessibility of such products, especially for younger individuals. Health professionals and school officials are urging parents to be vigilant about viral challenges and educate their children about the associated risks.
Recommendations and Safety Measures
In response to this incident, experts recommend stricter supervision and regulation of products marketed with extreme heat. They advocate for retailers to enforce age restrictions more rigorously and for manufacturers to provide clearer warnings about the health risks. Increased public awareness and education about these challenges are essential to prevent further tragedies.
