Young Woman Dies After Falling from Cliff in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge
PORTLAND, Ore. — A 22-year-old woman tragically lost her life after falling off a cliff while hiking in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, officials reported on Monday.
Incident Details
Elisha Angelic Macias, from Hillsboro, was hiking with friends on Sunday near Horsetail Falls, a popular destination about 35 miles east of Portland. The group was exploring the scenic area when Macias separated from her friends and ventured off the designated trail. According to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Macias accidentally fell an estimated 50 to 60 feet from the cliff. None of her friends witnessed the fall.
Emergency Response
At approximately 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, a 911 call was made by a witness who saw someone fall from a cliff near the Oneonta Trailhead. Moments later, a second caller confirmed the fall and reported that bystanders were performing CPR on the victim.
Emergency responders, including deputies from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, search and rescue teams, and medical personnel, quickly arrived at the scene. Despite the immediate efforts of bystanders and emergency responders, Macias was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of her injuries.
Recovery and Investigation
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office's search and rescue team worked with the medical examiner to recover Macias' body from the difficult terrain. The recovery operation required careful coordination due to the rugged landscape and potential hazards.
The medical examiner is conducting an investigation to determine the official cause of death. While the fall itself is presumed to be the cause, a thorough examination is standard procedure in such cases to rule out any other factors.
Support for Those Affected
In addition to the emergency response, a volunteer trauma support group was dispatched to the scene to provide emotional support and resources to Macias' friends and any witnesses affected by the tragic event. These groups play a crucial role in helping individuals cope with the immediate aftermath of such traumatic incidents.
Hiking Safety Reminders
This tragic incident underscores the importance of adhering to trail guidelines and safety precautions while hiking. Park officials remind hikers to stay on designated trails, avoid venturing into unknown or dangerous areas, and always hike with a companion when possible. If separated from a group, it is advised to stay within visible range or maintain communication to ensure safety.
